πŸ† Tennis Tournament Best Practices

Maximize your tournament success with these proven strategies

Planning

πŸ“… Find Tournaments

Plan 4+ months in advance: Some tennis tournaments close registration 4 months before the start date. For example, USTA Orange Bowl in December closes registration in August. MatchTennis Application often sends notifications of various USTA tournament registration dates as reminders.

🎫 Register & Apply for Wildcard

Register singles and doubles + wildcard: Sign up for the tennis tournament, and always sign up for both singles and doubles to avoid potential manual errors and reach out to potential doubles partners (unless there is an additional cost). In case of not being able to get in, players can apply for the wild card and Apply early: Submit wildcard requests well in advance with a compelling case.

Apply the Right Level based on Draw Size
  • β€’ 32-draw tournaments: More competitive, 5 matches required, plan for full weekend
  • β€’ 64+ draw tournaments: Professional level, requires peak fitness and mental stamina
  • β€’ Round robin format: Guaranteed multiple matches, great for experience and practice

🏨 Book Hotel

Book closer to the site: Check the tournament sites information and book the hotel that is closer to the site, because sometimes different age groups play at different sites. You can always cancel the hotel if the player doesn't get in, especially for big national tournaments such as Clay Court at Rome GA, or Easter Bowl at CA.

✈️ Book Air Tickets

Book with buffer: In case of weather or climate special situations, it's wise to arrive 2 days before the start date so that you won't get stressed by flight delays or cancellations. Players can warm up the day before, and USTA L1 often has registration 1 day before the start date. Important: In case of unknown finish date, book one-way tickets first to the tournament, then use airline points to book one-way home and try to do standby with cheaper tickets but standby for the better schedule.

πŸš— Book Car

Book at the airport: Hertz and Avis are good, Ace is ok. Don't use Dollar or Thrift. Some rental car companies are outside of the airport (e.g., Miami rental: Hertz, National, Dollar, Enterprise, Thrifty, Alamo, Avis, ACE, Sixt, Payless, Budget, Royal, Carnival). Don't rent from Economy, Dollar, or Thrift.

🌀️ Check Weather

Pack proper clothes: There can be unexpected warm or cold weather. For example, Winter Nationals at San Antonio can be 40 degrees in the morning. Check the weather forecast before packing.

🎾 Match Day

Tournament Day Essentials

  • Hydration: Drink water consistently before and during matches
  • Nutrition: Eat light, energy-rich foods 2-3 hours before playing
  • Equipment check: Bring backup rackets, extra strings, and proper shoes
  • Mental preparation: Have a pre-match routine to get in the zone
  • Recovery items: Pack ice packs, foam roller, and stretching bands

Early Check-In Strategy

  • Check weather 2 hours before match time: Monitor weather conditions to prepare for any changes and adjust your arrival time if needed
  • Arrive 45-60 minutes early: Give yourself time to acclimate to the environment and warm up properly
  • Check court conditions: Assess the surface speed, bounce, and any unique characteristics
  • Review the draw: Understand your bracket position and potential opponents
  • Confirm match time: Verify your scheduled court and time to avoid any confusion
  • Scout opponents: If possible, watch your potential opponents play to understand their style
